Osamu Tezuka created some of the greatest manga of any generation, but even more amazingly he created a lot of great super-powered characters. One of the greatest is easily the super-doctor Black Jack.
Black Jack volume 1 reprints the characters earliest adventures, and they are things of beauty. Great art, compelling stories, great action; these are straight up some of the most compelling stories you can find.

Peter Bagge and Gilbert Hernandez are not the most mainstream names in comic, but they certainly tried their hands at it once upon a time.
