Thor’s Day 19: The Icy Hearts
Sal Buscema draws his first issue of Walt Simonson’s Thor with Mighty Thor 355.
Thor wakes up in the care of a massive, bearded man of unknown name. Much of the next several pages involve a recap of the last year of Simonson’s Thor, but after that we finally get to some fun.
The Asgardian heroes that fought Surtur’s minions on Midgard are now trapped there. The Warriors Three spend a few entertaining panels go in search of a drink and meal, but alas, they decide to do it at Macys.
Tiwaz the giant continues to nurse Thor back to health in his realm while also trying to teach him a few things in the process. The pages are all well drawn, but they seem to go nowhere. It makes one long for more Macys shopping.
Finally, Tiwaz points out the direction Thor needs to follow. Finally he arrives at a hostel, only to discover the Asgardian children and his stepmother Frigga.
Finally by story’s end we learn the secret of Tiwaz, just as this chapter of Thor comes to a close.
Sadly, Simonson seemed to use Buscema’s guest art as an excuse to produce a mostly filler issue this time around. Though ultimately Thor is reunited with his mother and can rescue the Asgardian children, in the end nothing of true note is really accomplished. Hopefully that will change next issue.
Film and Comics: Fun with the Avengers
I have a review of the Avengers now running over at the Examiner, where I take to task some of the naysayers of the comic community. Read it here.
Then I follow it up with a list of solid follow-up reads to the Avengers film, most of which will probably be familiar to readers of this site, but perhaps a few will come as surprises. Check them all out here (and make sure to view the slide show!)
